Summer has well and truly arrived. It’s the season perfect to get outdoors and enjoy the warm sunshine; perhaps with a game of backyard cricket, or catching up with friends over a barbeque. While you’re enjoying the outdoors, keep an eye out for any possible leaks around your property. Don’t be caught out by a shock water bill after Christmas, be aware of signs that can indicate a hidden leak.
Concealed leaks, especially those underground, are usually not visible. A leaking underground water pipe can silently waste thousands of litres per day! However, here are some tips to help you stay alert.
Soft patches of ground – when you’re out gardening or catching a ball, take note if there’s a particular part of the ground that seems extra soft, or muddy. Also, be alert for dampness around the property, as underground leaks can be under concrete (driveways and patios) and will be difficult to detect. You might notice some wetness along the outer wall or water ‘oozing’ from below the concrete near the tap.
Greener and taller grass – well, who wouldn’t want to have a lovely healthy looking, lush, green lawn? However, if you have an unusual patch that is extra green or tall, especially if you haven’t had much rain, then something might not be right. Grass has shallow roots so an underground leak will constantly be feeding to that area of the lawn, thus accelerating its growth.
If you suspect there is a leak, a quick way to check is to look at your water meter:
- Turn off all taps and water-using appliances.
- Go to the water meter and see if the dials are moving, if so, there may be a leak.
- If there’s no movement, take a recording and come back after an hour (without using any water). If the reading has changed, you might have a slow leak.
