Leakspotters leak prevention tips - Happy Holidays !Handy Tips to Help Prevent Water Damage When You’re Away

Well, it’s that fun time of the year – summer holidays, Christmas and the New Year! Many of us will be visiting relatives and friends, or going on the much-anticipated family holiday for a well-deserved break.

However, while we always remember to lock up windows and doors, or switch off electrical appliances before going away, it’s also worth remembering to check your plumbing.
Here are some handy tips to prevent water damage, which won’t take you more than a few minutes to do before you leave:

Turn off taps

This involves more than just turning off the taps in your kitchen or bathrooms sinks. You should also turn off the water supply to your washing machine and dishwasher taps. This is because the water in these hoses are under constant pressure and can cause a burst pipe if left unused for extended periods of time. By shutting off the taps, even if a hose bursts, only the small amount of water left in the pipes would come out, saving you from costly water damage to your home.

Check your gutters

Don’t forget to also go outside and make sure there isn’t a buildup of debris or leaf litter blocking your gutters and downpipes, which could cause an overflow in case of rains and storms while you’re away. Plus, check that your garden taps are shut off and it’s also a good idea to remove the tap key and garden hose.

Check your toilets

Flush your toilet to clear the sewerage pipes, then listen for any hissing sounds in case you have a cistern leak. You should also turn off the stop valve (the water supply from the side of the tank) which is usually located near the bottom of the toilet.

Finally, as an extra precaution, turn off the main water supply at the water meter. This ensures a minimal loss of water in case of any possible concealed leaks while you’re away.

If you suspect you may have a water leak around your home or commercial premises, don’t delay in contacting our professional team at Leakspotters. It’s not worth the risk of incurring possible damage to your property while you are away.

Leakspotters can help you locate any concealed leaks quickly and efficiently, giving you peace of mind to enjoy your well-earned holiday. Call today 1300 362 858
